IKO Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
Most IKO underlayment or deck repair jobs in Pasadena run between $450 and $1,800 installed, depending on how much of the deck surface needs replacement and which IKO-compatible underlayment is specified. We carry IKO-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials on our trucks and can typically have a crew to your home within 48 hours after the estimate. Here’s what usually brings homeowners to this page: a leak shows up near a valley or penetration, a roofer or home inspector writes “deck repair needed” on a report, or an old underlayment has worn through after years of Southern California sun and the plywood beneath it has begun to soften.
The good news is that this is a repair with a clear finish line. The deck gets fixed, the new underlayment goes down, and the roof above it gets put back with materials that match what was there before. Birchbark Roofing Pasadena is an independent roofing contractor and is not affiliated with IKO, but we work with IKO materials regularly and know how their underlayment products perform in Pasadena’s climate.
Which IKO Models This Applies To
IKO makes two underlayment lines that show up most often on Pasadena roofs: IKO Armourbase synthetic underlayment and IKO Roof-Fast asphalt-saturated felt. If your roof was installed within the last 10 to 15 years and the original paperwork lists IKO, there’s a good chance one of these is sitting under your shingles or tile right now. The compatibility question really comes down to what’s under the top layer, not what’s on top of it. IKO underlayment is used under IKO shingles, but it’s also installed under tile, metal, and other manufacturers’ shingles, so you can’t always tell what you have just by looking at the shingle brand.
Here’s the gotcha that matters for deck repair: IKO’s Armourbase is a synthetic product roughly 4 feet wide, and proper installation calls for specific overlap and fastening patterns. If a previous repair used a narrower or mismatched felt, the seam placement can create exactly the kind of channel that lets water work its way to the deck. When we open up a roof in Pasadena and find a failing deck, the cause is almost always one of three things: a seam that was lapped the wrong direction, a penetration that was never properly flashed in the first place, or a patch that was too small for the actual damage. Before we quote a deck repair, we measure the existing underlayment and check the seam pattern so the repair doesn’t just replace the bad section but actually integrates with what’s already there.
For the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: we prefer OEM-spec IKO underlayment when the existing roof system was installed with IKO products, simply because the seams, widths, and fastener schedules line up. Quality aftermarket synthetics can work fine, but the deck repair has to be sized for the material we’re installing, not the other way around. You’ll see our exact material choice in the written estimate before any work starts.

Signs Your IKO Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Stains on the ceiling after rain, especially near a valley or wall intersection. This is the most direct signal. Water is getting past the top layer and the underlayment, and the deck below has begun to absorb it. By the time the stain shows inside, the deck sheathing has usually been wet more than once.
- Visible waviness or sagging across a roof plane. When decking gets wet repeatedly, plywood or OSB delaminates and loses its stiffness. From the ground or from a ladder at the eave, you’ll see a soft dip in an area that should run straight to the edge.
- A section of shingles or tile lifting along a straight seam line. Underlayment seam failures often telegraph through as a ridge or a lifted line in the material above. If you can spot a straight line of raised shingles, that’s often where the underlayment seam is working against itself.
- Granules collecting heavily in the gutters beneath one particular slope. IKO shingle granule loss can be normal wear, but when it concentrates under one plane, it tells us the deck below may be flexing and grinding the shingles from underneath. That flex destroys a roof faster than Pasadena’s sun ever will.
- A soft, spongy feel reported by anyone who’s walked the roof recently. If you’ve had gutters cleaned, a chimney swept, or an HVAC tech on the roof, and they mentioned a soft spot, don’t wait. Soft decking means the structural layer is losing its integrity, and the repair scope grows every season it’s left alone.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a straightforward IKO-compatible underlayment and deck repair in Pasadena, installed pricing usually lands between $450 and $1,800. The variables are predictable: how many sheets of decking need replacement, whether the repair is on a simple walkable slope or a steep cut-up section, and how much of the upper roof material has to be temporarily removed to reach the bad area. A single sheet of rotted decking replaced with new underlayment often runs toward the lower end of that range. A valley with two sides of failed decking and a section of missing IKO Armourbase runs toward the middle or upper.
Every Birchbark Roofing Pasadena estimate includes a written line-item breakdown before we touch anything. That written price covers the decking, the underlayment, the fasteners, the labor, and the re-installation of the material we removed. There is no vague “deck repair” line buried in the quote. Erik Lindgren is known for taking his time on the inspection walk, and he writes out exactly what he found, what he recommends, and what it will cost. If anything changes after we open the roof, you’ll hear about it from a person, with a number, before more work happens.
DIY or Call Us?
An owner can safely do two things: track the stain pattern inside and keep a record of when leaks appear relative to rainfall, and check the gutters for concentrated granule buildup. Those are useful notes to share with any contractor. What an owner should not DIY is the deck and underlayment repair itself. Opening a roof surface and replacing decking involves removing and reinstalling the top material correctly, fastening the new deck to the framing below, and placing underlayment with proper seam and overlap detail. Get any of that wrong and the new material becomes a water channel within a season or two.
There’s also the practical reality of working on a roof plane in Pasadena: many sections are steep, and the fall hazard is real. Our background-checked, uniformed techs do this work every week, with the right equipment and a clean-up plan for your home before and after. If you’d rather not climb a ladder at all, call (626) 657-5397 and we’ll schedule the inspection walk. You’ll have the price in writing before we touch a single shingle.
FAQs
IKO synthetic underlayment like Armourbase can function well for 20 to 30 years in Pasadena’s climate if it was installed correctly and the roof above it stays intact. The weak point is almost never the material itself; it’s the penetration details, seam laps, and deck condition underneath. When those fail, the underlayment becomes the last line of defense instead of the first, and its lifespan collapses. Call (626) 657-5397 for an inspection if your roof is past 15 years old and you’re seeing any of the signs above.
Sometimes yes, if the underlayment is torn but the deck below is dry, solid, and tests sound. We’ll drill a small probe hole or use a moisture reading to confirm. If the deck is compromised, patching over it just hides the problem, and the next leak will come through bigger. You’ll see our finding and our recommendation in the written estimate before any repair is approved.
A typical single-deck-sheet repair with new underlayment takes one working day for a two-person crew, including removal, replacement, reinstallation, and clean-up. Larger valley repairs or repairs on steep sections can run to two days. We’ll tell you the schedule before we start, and we coordinate the door schedule with you if a dog needs to stay inside while we work.
Our trucks carry IKO-compatible synthetic underlayment, standard decking sizes, and the fasteners and flashing we need for deck repairs in Pasadena. We also work with materials from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed when the existing roof calls for a different match. If we need a specific IKO product that isn’t on the truck, we’ll bring it on the scheduled repair day instead of making you wait.
