Boral Shingle Repair: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Boral-compatible shingle repair parts for Pasadena homes, with most repairs running between $350 and $900 depending on how many shingles are involved and what shape the underlayment is in. In most cases, we can get a technician out to you within a day or two once we know the specific Boral profile you have. The way it usually starts is this: you’re in the backyard after a Santa Ana wind, or you’re up on a ladder cleaning gutters, and you spot one cracked shingle, a couple that have slipped, or a small patch that’s missing entirely. Maybe there’s a water stain on the garage ceiling that wasn’t there last winter. Boral makes a good product, but California sun, wind, and the occasional roof rat or raccoon do what they do.
Which Boral Models This Applies To
Boral’s roofing line has shifted over the years, but the big names we see on Pasadena roofs are Boral CedarLite, Boral CedarTuf, and the Boral Profile series, with the occasional older Boral ClayTile or Boral SteelShake installation still holding on. The key thing to know is that Boral shingles are not all interchangeable. A CedarLite shingle has a different butt thickness and exposure than a CedarTuf shingle, and the Profile lines vary in length and shadow line. If you have a leftover bundle in your garage or shed, check the end label for the profile name and the manufacturing code. If you don’t have a label, we can match it by measuring the exposed portion, the butt thickness, and the overall shingle length when we come out. For most Boral products, we use genuine Boral parts when we can still source them. In cases where a specific color or profile has been discontinued, we use quality aftermarket equivalents that match the exposure and thickness closely enough that the repair doesn’t stand out from the ground. The one compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Boral’s concrete tile profiles (ClayTile, SteelShake) require a different fastener and underlayment approach than their composite shake and shingle lines, so if you mix those up, you end up with cracked tiles and voids under the shingle. We’ll identify what you have before we quote anything. Birchbark Roofing Pasadena is an independent roofing contractor, not a Boral dealer or affiliate, which means we match parts honestly rather than pushing one product line.

Signs Your Boral Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Visible cracks or splits in the shingle face. Over time, California UV breaks down the polymers in Boral composite shingles, making them brittle. Once a crack opens, water gets behind the shingle and starts working on the underlayment, which is a slower, sneakier problem than the crack itself looks.
- Shingles that have slipped or slid down the roof plane. This usually means the nail or screw holding the shingle has backed out or the fastener hole has wallowed out from wind vibration. One slipped shingle exposes the one beneath it, and suddenly you have a cascading patch of exposed fasteners.
- Granule-colored grit piling up in your gutters or at downspout outlets. Boral composite shingles shed surface material as they age. A little is normal. A lot means the shingle’s protective layer is gone and the body of the shingle is now taking UV directly.
- Water stains on the underside of roof sheathing you can see from the attic. By the time a Boral shingle is visibly failing from the roof side, water has often been getting under it for months. Look for dark, soft, or watermarked plywood edges near the repair area.
- Cupping edges or curling corners on individual shingles. In Pasadena’s hot-dry cycle, underlayment and shingle edges can expand and contract unevenly. Cupping means the shingle has lost its original flat profile and will start channeling water sideways instead of shedding it over the one below.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most Boral shingle repairs in Pasadena, you’re looking at $350 to $900 installed. That covers a small patch of one to six shingles, replacement fasteners, a section of fresh underlayment if the old felt or synthetic is compromised, and re-sealing the surrounding shingles so the repair ties in cleanly. If the damage runs more than a few shingles, or if we find rotted roof decking underneath, the number climbs accordingly. You’ll have your exact price in writing before we touch a single shingle, and that written price is the price, no change orders unless we open the roof and find something we couldn’t see from the outside and you approve the extra work first. Every repair we do is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise, so if the repair doesn’t hold, we come back and make it right. We also include shoe covers at your door, drop cloths through any interior pathway we use, and a photo of the completed clean-up before we leave.
DIY or Call Us?
What’s safe to do yourself: check your attic for water staining, clean your gutters so you can see how much grit is accumulating, and take photos from the ground or from a ladder you’ve set up properly. What’s not safe: walking a Boral roof to replace a shingle if you’re not experienced with sloping surfaces and composite shingle fastening. Boral shingles are heavier than asphalt and they can crack if you kneel wrong or use the wrong fastener depth. If you miss a nail slot or over-drive a fastener, you’ll crack the shingle you’re trying to fix and create a leak next to the one you just solved. Our crew has been working Pasadena roofs for years, and we’ve seen the handyman repairs that saved $200 and cost $2,000. For a free, honest look at what you’ve got, call us at (626) 657-5397. Erik Lindgren will walk the roof with you, or at least the areas that can be safely accessed, and write up what he found.
FAQs
Boral composite shingles generally last 20 to 30 years in Pasadena, but our inland heat and UV intensity take real years off the surface layer, especially on south- and west-facing slopes. A shingle that would look fine after 20 years in a coastal microclimate may need replacement by year 15 or 18 here. The underlayment usually fails before the shingle body does. Call (626) 657-5397 for a free inspection if your Boral roof is over 15 years old and you’re seeing any of the signs above.
A single cracked or slipped Boral shingle can almost always be repaired without touching the rest of the roof, as long as the surrounding shingles are sound and the underlayment underneath isn’t compromised. If the damage is widespread or the underlayment has failed in multiple spots, replacement becomes the honest recommendation instead of patching. We’ll never sell you a roof when a shingle swap will do.
Most Boral shingle repairs take between one and three hours on site, depending on how many shingles we’re replacing and what we find when we lift the old ones. We’ll match the shingle, pull the old fasteners, inspect the underlayment, install the new piece, and re-seal the area. You’ll get the clean-up photo before we go.
We stock common Boral profiles and colors on our trucks for the Pasadena area, along with compatible fasteners and sealants. For less common or discontinued Boral lines, we source the material from our supply network and schedule the repair once the right shingle is in hand. If you’re not sure what profile you have, snap a close-up photo and we’ll identify it from that before we order anything.
